I am thinking about putting mothballs in my flower pots and flower bed because the squirrels and really ticking me off.
In 10 years, I have never had a problem with this. But for some aggravating reason, this spring the squirrels have started digging up and destroying my plants.
I love animals, but this is really trying my nerves!!! }:o(
Will moth balls harm plants?
I've used them to keep the cat's from using my flower bed as a litter box.- I have never noticed that the plants were harmed from doing this.
Reply:Mothballs are toxic to living things. Even humans. There was a recent story in the paper about an elderly lady who died from smelling the fumes so long in her house. Mothballs have a really strong odor, too. It's best to plant garlic around them or in the pot. As long as you don't slice it open it won't smell to you but it does to squirrels %26amp; other creatures and they hate it. The only place I put mothballs is in the garbage can outside at the bottom to keep them out. You can also mix cayenne pepper in a bottle of water %26amp; spray as a good deterrent. Unless you have mexican squirrels that like it hot. lol!
Reply:No, they will not harm your plants and they will effectively keep squirrels from destroying them. They aren't harmful to the squirrels either, this is an animal friendly option.
Good Luck!
Reply:Last year I threw a whole box of mothballs on the grass under my purple martin house to keep snakes away. The grass never showed any ill effects from the mothballs.
Don't know if it will work with squirrels. Please let me know...thanks.
Reply:They won't hurt the plants. They will hurt the moth more when you put them on the plants.
Thanks. I'm going to try mixing moth balls with the soil when I plant flowering bulbs. We have a problem with gophers who have been digging up my daffodil bulbs.
