He only digs in one spot, but he's now created a second hole. He loves being outside so we let him out a lot and he has a lot, I mean A LOT of toys outside and inside. However, he won't stop digging. We've tried covering the now two holes with large flower pots although he's dug underneath those, too.
Any ideas without having to keep him inside constantly?
How you do stop a 5 mo. puppy from digging in the yard?
You should try burying a few lava rocks or some kind of non-barbed wire in the holes that he's dug. He won't like the feel of them on his paws. And if you actually SEE him digging then you can accompany that with telling him no. If he moves on to a new spot, just do the same thing. Eventually he'll get the idea. My training books also say to never let your dog see a human digging in the yard, but I really don't think that matters much... Hope this helps!
Reply:Spray him with the water hose.
Reply:He's digging because he's bored...he can have all the toys in the world but without someone to play with them WITH him, it's boring! When my puppy started doing that, I just walked him more often or even threw the ball till he got tired. With a puppy, it doesn't take too long.
Reply:four and five are good answers. boredom

Reply:Digging is boredom and stress energy. Ask why your puppy is spending so much time alone. He doesn't want toys, he wants his pack and that is your family. He should be inside with you or outside while you can watch him. He is only a puppy and needs to be with people or in his crate until he learns good manners. Dogs left in the yard a lot develop all kinds of behaviour problems BTW and this could be a very big issue down the road. He needs a lot of exercise to burn off puppy energy and he should only be left alone when older and when he understands the yard is part of the larger den. Even then a dog should not be left alone for long. He will get out one day, no matter how well built, and then you have real dangers.
