We have a typical pair of 14" - 16" pots on our front steps. My wife wants to plant Coleus as the main flower but wants other flowers to balance the Coleus. What other flowers look complementary with Coleus and thrive?
What other flowers go well with Coleus in a 14" - 16" diameter pot?
You could try tuberous non-stop begonias, another shade loving plant. I have planted a pot with one huge lime green coleus, a bright orange begonia, and one plant of coral colored diascia. I have planted another with one huge very dark burgundy coleus, a ruby colored begonia, a dark pink impatiens, and a "black" sweet potato vine. They are both spectacular! Good luck!
Reply:You could try plain green trailing plants like ivy that will tumble over the side of the pot and not detract from the colourful Coleus.
Reply:None.
Reply:Coleus is a partial sun shade plant. It can do well in either spot. So once you figure out where you want your coleus, go from there. You can have many choices.
Somethings that I've seen paired with coleus: impatients begonias, gerber daisies, flocks, Coxcombs(these look neat behind the coleus because they get tall, be warned however, once you put cox combs somewhere you'll have them there forever).
Whatever you prefer really. Coleus is complimenting to just about any other flowers. It's all about what you want. Experiment and have fun!!!
Reply:I disagree with number 1. Coleus love sun. My bed is beautiful: Agapantha, begonia, some large green leafy plants as backgroudn to set off the colors.
Agapantha comes in purple and white. Both tropical and both beautiful. Lots of green with it and dramatic, abundent flowers all summer.
I use monkey grass or loriope to trim the bed and a good mulch.
Reply:Coleus is a shade loving plant that does not need a lot of watering. It is an annual which means it will only last one season. Whatever you put in with it should have similar requirements. Impatiens is a good choice
