What's your favorite flower?
My FAVORITE are Cymbidium Orchids... not easy to raise, but the flowers I have come from bulbs of my Mother's that date back to the 1950's.
My next would be good-old roses.
Next would be California Poppies, and then marigolds (for benificial bugs around my garden.).
Reply:My favorite flowers it he Shasta Daisy (white with yellow centers). I live in Massachusetts and they grow wild up here in the summer so I'm sure they would grow fine in Texas.
Reply:I love the smell of Sweet Peas. Chinese lanterns are pretty in the Fall and you can take them inside and put them dry in a vase....very decorative over the winter. I will admit that I don't know if these are good for your location or not.

Reply:Black-eyed Susans are very pretty and hardy.
Reply:If you want something that is really showy and beautiful, plant dahlias. The large kind.
Reply:My favorite flower is sea thrift. It looks like grass. The flowers are little round hot pink flowers on a slender stem. They remind me of Dr. Seuss flowers. I'm not sure how it would work in Texas.
For heat try sedums and cactus. There are loads of varieties.
The US National Arboretum has a hardiness zone map which breaks up the United States into growing zones. If you have a gardening catalog, they usually include that map. Each plant would list the growing zones in which it can thrive. You'll also find growing zone numbers listed on plants in your local nursery.
I used to live in Wisconsin. My sister lives in Florida. Daffodils thrived by me and withered by her. Occasionally, I brought her a weak houseplant. My azalea became a happy and healthy shrub in her yard. So did my amaryllis. Those spread and put up a stunning display every year.
Good luck.
