Flowering perennials in pots?

Flowering perennials in pots?
Most perennials are fairly easy to grown from seed, but i assume you are wanting to keep them in pots for their whole lives rather than plant them out in the garden. In this case, there are limitations (size, soil requirements, etc.) which mean that some perennials are better suited to pot culture than others. Indeed, some tender or half hardy perennials are best grown in pots which are moved under cover in the winter.

Have listed below a few which i know from personal experience can be grown in pots year after year. This is only a short list and you should really experiment as there are probably many hundreds which can be grown this way:

1. Linaria purpurea (purple toadflax): elegant spires of spiky green leaves topped with small purple flowers. Easy from seed. Hardy

2. Penstemon species: slightly tender perennials which can be grown in a large tub. Not long lived but very colourful

3. Delphiniums: Mostly hardy, large blue flowers all summer

4. Hollyhocks: tall with large saucer-shaped flowers. Best grown as an annual really but is in fact a perennial

5. Purslanes: (including the flowering Portulaca grandiflora and the edible Portulaca oleracea). Tender perennials which grow best in dry, sandy soil in full sun. Easily grown in a tub and can be kept in a cool room/greenhouse/shed over winter (or covered with dry bracken or floss). Succulent fleshy leaves and in the case of grandiflora spectacular flowers in reds, yellows and purples.

As I said there are MANY MANY more which can be grown in tubs and this list is just a list of plants which I have grown and know are easy from seed. Enjoy experimenting and good luck!
