Why are growth retardants often sprayed on potted flowers?

it's commonly done to keep the plants at a 'standard' size and just 'coming into' bloom so that they are at the premium size for landscapers or home gardeners... the sales benefit....a couple racks are left alone to go ahead and grow bigger and bloom on, those are for the 'I want it NOW' gardeners...... some are even kept in the pre-bloom stage, to be the 'second run' after the first run is sold out..... all nurserys and greenhouses don't necessarily plant/order in successive weeks, but use the retardant a little too much.....
