Will it harm a tree if I use its knot hole as a flower planter?

I have a big walnut tree in my yard and it has a hole in the center at the top (about eight feet up from ground level)... looks like years ago it was topped off to make the branches spread out. This hole is about a foot across and a foot deep. I am curious if I were to put potting soil and a climbing plant of some sort (not ivy) would it harm the tree?

nothing grows in or under a walnut tree.... it has a chemical in it that stops plant growth around it...your plant in the knothole won't live... look up 'juglone'... that's the chemical.....

Reply:With the watering it will eventually rot out, but the way your describing the tree, it sounds like that will happen anyway (hopefully for not many years). . . If you could fit some sort of pot in it, I think it would help some. . . I know you said you did not want ivy, but there is some ivy out there called sub zero ivy which stays green all year round. We have some growing up and around our cedars and is looks great all year long :) GL!!!
Reply:I have seen things like that in nature, so I doubt it will harm the tree.
Reply:No. Go ahead. It won't harm the tree in the least.
Reply:I don't believe it would harm the tree.
Reply:i really dont know about that. but sounds like a nice idea. ill ask my local gardener.
