i have two concrete flower pots in the front of my house and every time we plant something in there it develops root rot and the plants die, we use good potting soil ex: miracle grown potting soil, and we are constantly losing our plants, it has gotten so bad my hubby says no more we will plant artificial plants and i am like no way... could u all help us find a solution as to why these plants arent growing and what we can do to help them??? thank u to all who answer... Have a good weekend from our family to yours...
I need some flower help please???
Are there drain holes in the bottom of your pots? Also,,,,how much sun or shade are your pots getting each day? Make sure the plants you are planting in them match the amount of light they will be getting in your pots. Do you have any pets or neighbors pets that may using your pots for a toilet? There could be a disease in the soil you are using...do you change it each year? I'm just throwing ya questions to ask yourself...these will help you eliminate things and hopefully come to a conclusion. Over watering can kill a plant fast too so check your watering.....most garden plants don't like to sit in water....(this goes back to the question are there holes in the bottom of your pots....because if not, you should drill some into them)
I would try removing all the soil.....washing down your pots with a bleach-water mixture and starting all over fresh. Good luck and don't give up!
Reply:If the pots are clean and sterile and the dirt is fresh and sterile and there is sun and you have the right kind of plants for that area, and you have drainage holes and the water actually does come out because you have broken clay in the bottom, and no animals are getting to it... maybe you are using too much water. How often and how much do you water it? It is OK for it to dry out a bit between watering's.
My other question would be, are these pots made for planting flowers? Maybe there is something in the chemicals leaching into the soil if they were not meant to hold live plants. But my first guess is that you are watering too much. And what kind of flowers are you planting. Some are harder to grow than others. And are the flowers healthy to start with?
Reply:Please do follow-up simple points for Planting Flowers.
For a Rose Flower Plant.
1. Selec Correct Soil without Chemicals. ( you can take Soil near Fertileland out side of city)
2. Use Cow dung as Manure. Best one for Flower Pot.
3. Use empty Egg shells, make into Powder and spread near the root of Sapling.
4.Do watering 2 times in 7 days. ( Do not pore more Water)
5.Ensure all the water in Pot should go out. Logging water in pot also spoil the Flower Plant.
6. Ensure sunrays are falling on Flower Plant.
7.Keep all Plastic items/perfume/shapoo/Hair oil etc away from Plant.
Do follow-up the above methods, your Rose Plant will give best blossom and do sent e.mail to me.

Reply:Grow drought tolerant flowers and water them less frequently... drainage shouldnt be a problem... terariums lack drainage holes and nothing happens to the plants inside... But you can add a thick layer of gravel in the bottom to hold excess water... Visit floridata.com and from the tag lists, select the drought tolerant flowers... Good luck... You should have the heart to water them less... Sometimes with less water, you can have happier plants... I've gained the experience after buying a clivia plant...
Reply:so did u check whether those drain holes are working fine? when u water your flowers does water come out of drain holes? i would suggest u put some drainage on the bottom - pebbles will do fine. a few cm of pebbles, then soil. when u water flowers water till water starts pouring from drain holes. then do not water till earth dries. but it shouldn't completely dry. i usually check with fingers - if it feels dry to touch but doesn't look dry it is time to water again. this what that guy said water twice a week is a complete bull. if it is a hot summer and flower beds are in the sun they will dry completely. u should water them every day. anyway, if your plant develops a root rot it means it is standing in water. maybe those drainage holes do not work cos they re clogged with earth
Reply:you can plant a bogainvilla in that pot...it may do the work
Reply:Concrete flower pots? Where does the water go? Do they have drainage holes? If indeed have no drainage holes how about water lilies? We grow them, they are beautiful.
If not, insert a clay pot with a drainage hole, that will fit into the concrete pots. Soak the clay pot in a bucket of water first. At the bottom of the pot, put a layer of stones or cleaned gravel. They usually sell these items at the garden center. The stones and gravel assist in draining out excess water.
If there are hole in the concrete, then think about getting plants that don't mind their "feet" of roots getting wet. A few that come to mind are iris, ferns, or astilbe.
