I am looking for suggestions for plant pots made out of household items any takers?

This is for a project including children. They will be decorated, filled with dirt, flowers planted. We don't want the plants to get rootbound to quickly so keep that in mind.

what I have around my yard is this...

old enamel ware pots from the fifties

old watering cans

vintage 1920's suitcase (hard sided) picked up at a garage sale for 2 bucks...lol

my husbands old work boots

my neighbor used a pair of old toddler/infant bib overall shorts and sewed the legs up just under the crotch and filled with dirt and flowers she hung them on her fence or you can add wire to the straps so they can stand up.

also use a piece of 6 inch plastic pipe that was laying around the yard 5 ft long, filled it with cement about a foot from the bottom and then cut holes in the pipe every 6 inches and filled with dirt and planted flowers in it...vertical planter.
Reply:One project I saw for kids was to cut the tops off of 2 liter plastic soda bottles. Then take twine and glue it to the plastic bottle, just below the cut edge. Put a little bit of glue on the bottle, then just wind the twine around and around the bottle until you get to the bottom.

They were really cute, the planting area is a decent size, and you're teaching the kids to reuse items.

Good luck with your project!
Reply:One thing you can do is take any kind of plastic container. Paint it with paint for plastic and after it dries, use some ordinary spackle or stucco patch and pat it onto the container. You will instantly have something looks very much like concrete or you can make very textures and designs by patting, swirling or whatever.

It sticks like mad!
Reply:old hats. cut holes in the tops for drainage. also, old toys. colanders are perfect 'cause they already have drainage.
Reply:A few good ideas I've seen others do. Use: old boots (they really are neat!), old tool boxes, old wash tubs or crates, tires, iron kettles; look for old things laying around outside or in your garage, anything that will hold soil and is deep enough will do!
Reply:I've notice their is a lack of nice toilet bowl planters out their?

tom
Reply:Okay...

tin cans

glass jars

white coffee cups you find at the dollar store

empty baby food jars

milk cartons cleaned out and cut down lower

margarine containers (prime them with oil-based primer first)

white bowls you get at the dollar store
Reply:Whatever you use make sure you put gravel in first so your roots don't get rootbound. If you use baskets place a layer of plastic in first before you put a layer of gravel. If you use tin cans or plastic ware you can drill holes at the bottom.
Reply:If you want something a bit bigger, try a car tyre. put newspaper down, then some barks or stones before dirt, compost or potting mix. have fun!
